Gaming and VR at SXSW 2019

A look at VR and gaming on the final day of SXSW 2019. There was also a cosplay competition and, at night, a party with bands.

Cosplay at SXSW 2019

If you are interested in cosplay, you may like these photos from a Hong Kong event. camera: iPhone 6s.

A charming woman whose name and character I did not get. If you happen to know her, or any of teh other cosplayers, kindly share this link with them. or just add the name of the character in the comments section. Thank you!

Games: Does anybody remember laughter?

Laughter makes us feel better. It's cheaper than chocolate and needs no prescription.

I googled "humor in gamemaking". Not a lot of posts, and most were not new. It seems no one shares my dream of 25 million Fortnite players laughing so hard they shoot milk through their noses. Or spaghetti.

The first suggestion from Google was from Makansutra, a great article by Bob Mackey

Forget photorealism and perfected motion controls; if there's anything we need to aspire to in video games, it's simply being funnier.

Bob Mackey

Bob is on twitter: @bobservo. He co-hosts Retronauts and hosts Talking Simpsons and What a Cartoon!

The second post-- from 2012, is also on Gamasutra. Written by Dan Cook, it is very informative, and full of links. It also includes the world's funniest joke (according to American men).

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy takes out his phone and calls the emergency services.

He gasps: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says: "Calm down, I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gunshot is heard.

Back on the phone, the guy says: "OK, now what?"

Dan Cook is on twitter: danctheduck, and the Chief Creative officer of Spryfox.  Blog

There are games that are obviously flat-out comedies, like the Borderlands series. Other titles, like Left 4 Dead, feature constant quipping by characters, and by movie standards could easily be described as comedic.
But looking at games you'll notice that, by their very nature, they are comedic. Even ultra-serious dramas can become comedic by virtue of allowing you, the player, to do things that go against their style...

The quote above is from Matthias Zarzecki's excellent article, What Makes Games Funny? A Look at Comedy and Humour in Video Games. Another one of the top Google suggestions, another one that is not current.Matthias' website is surprising and impressive: it's full of coding mathematics related to iOS and Unity Development.

So there you have it. I am a writer, a creative guy, a gamemaker and very interested in AR. Would be very happy to work with people to make game players laugh. I am serious.

B.D. Rileys, on a Sunday. This photo was taken from the sidewalk: the space behind the stage was open. Do not know the band's name unfortunately, but will never forget their HARP + attitude + fun cover of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. It was just a little breakaway in a medley that rocked, rocked, rocked. (Yes, a harp, the stand up kind, or the ones that angels float around with. Not a blues harp (harmonica).
One string washtub bass. B.D. Riley's again.

Battle of the Bands at the BIG3 Swing Dance
Saturday, March 16, 2019
at the Masonic Temple Crystal Ballroom in Detroit.

Featuring 15-piece Battle of the Bands winner,
The Paul Keller Orchestra vs.
Two-time Battle of the Bands winner, 15-piece Swingmania

The PKO is one of Michigan's finest, oldest, most respected and well-traveled jazz bands. The PKO has held forth every Monday night, for over 28 years, in Ann Arbor, first at the Bird of Paradise Jazz Club, then at the Firefly Club & Keystone Martini Bar and now at the Zal Gaz Grotto. The PKO's voluminous library of over 1,000 arrangements includes classic, obscure and original big band material from the entire history of jazz.

Two-time defending champions, 15-piece Swingmania from Toledo plays a wide variety of the classic swing and big band music of Miller, Ellington, and Basie plus favorites such as Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Cole, Prima and Presley. They have a solid hold on the swing scene in Northwest Ohio.

Frenchtown: 1812

Frenchtown presentation by Nick Sass

A presentation about the battle in Frenchtown (now called Monroe, Michigan), by the Harbor View Historical Society. Featured speaker: Lt. Col. Nick Sass USMC (Ret). With Samuel J. Bonifas, President Harbor View Historical Society, and Michael A. Joseph, curator.

I was fortunate to be back in Toledo a new able to catch this interesting presentation about what happened in this area in 1812. Nick is full of facts, perspectives and humor.

Bleeding edge AR (ha ha OUCH)

OK... the title. AR changes so quickly that a list of any sort of "avante-garde" will be outdated in an embarrassingly short time. When I made this "State of the ARt 2018 " list for my presentations at HK PolyU, I had to make additions to it a day or two after it went up...and then I just moved on.

However, in the past few months, and especially in the past few days, I have seen some very cool ideas, and simply want to share them. I saw these at the ARIA conference at MIT, the Virtual Hackathon at MIT, at SXSW, and as a result of my own research. I recently spent time in Shenzhen, and saw some cool things, but they weren't AR. I did write this.

Except for Bose and Leo, I haven't experienced any of the following...

6dai (I've known about them for a while, but they seem to release interesting updates very often)

<sneak preview 1> We love creativity at @6d_ai - here’s what our amazingly creative engineers can do at a music festival. Find people & segment them *in real-time on a phone* (and color them red!). Babble Rabbit (thank you, Eduardo Siman)

I’ve been testing the new #AR app @BabbleRabbit from @patchedreality which uses @6d_ai tech, by ramping up the occlusion difficulty level of the environment. I would love to jump into other AR projects, as a producer, writer, visual artist or sound/music producer.

Oh yeah... no one has paid me for any of the listings. I am doing something with Novaby, but the Black Hawk AR project is something special; I would mention it regardless of my involvement with Novaby.
