If you are here because you are interested in my AR-related startup ideas, this post gives you an overview.

FWIW, I will soon have stories on Popularium and ElevenAsia

I am writing this 30 hours after the marathon went live.On one hand my blog views are double what they usually are. On the other hand, there haven't been many viewers. That is OK. I didn't do any pre-publicity, I am not paying Facebook to blast the event and there are no costs, other than my time. I hope that towards the end of the 72 hours there are more viewers. For now, I can only say if you visit the FB live page, say hi.

Here is an email I've sent out to friends and associates:

Hello everyone... I hope the weekend is a good one for you.

Just to short note to say that I am doing a live FB broadcast from Ipoh-for 72 hours. I started Friday at 3, will finish at 3 on Monday. The camera I am using isn't very good, the audio is so-so, the internet is slow and I am silhouetted during the daytime. Perfect!

Actually I am learning a lot, and my blog is seeing a nice amount of action. The free ebooks are trickling out of Amazon. I can see clicks on my blog posts about my AR startup plans. Yesterday I was interviewed by a reporter from the Malay Mail.

Anyhoo...stop by and chat with the silhouette... and meet Secret Donut World, the Doughbots and steamboatbubikofoodtourwillie. http://www.blacksteps.tv/stephen-black-72-hour-facebook-live-broadcast/

Stephen Black's Cone is a 3 part project proposed for the 2017 Engadget Experience

Engadget Experience STEPHEN BLACK CONE (VR +AR +ebook)

Stephen Black’s Cone is a conceptual, experiential, multidisciplinary artwork: VR, AR, gaming, audio and text. Cone is conscious—and ignorant-- of fine art, dance, music, sound, design, animation, performance art, branding, storytelling, and installation. Cone has three parts: a short VR film experience, an AR experiment with Vance and a book documenting the creation and ideas associated with these two projects. Cone aims to help bridge the gap between artists and technologists.

Stephen Black is an artist, producer and writer. He was creative director of the Monja Kids Creative Development Kit, a 3D gamemaking kit which was successfully launched in Singapore.

Beach Road, Black’s 360 short film co-production with Hiverlab, was featured at film festivals in Brisbane, Singapore and Las Vegas. He curated SPOKEN, a virtual gallery(Unity) built by Eugene Soh. His text was a significant part of Michael Lee’s Office Orchitect installation at the 2011 Singapore Biennale.

now

To find out what nownownow is about, visit!

Hello!

A short update for now, November 26, 2017. This is my focus NOW.

I am an American who has experienced Life mainly in Asia, in the areas of art, television production, music, fine art and commercial photography, food, VR and gaming.

I am now combining these experiences and writing books, creating a new portfolio of visual works and finalizing business plans for two startups one VR-based, one AR-based.

I am especially keen to communicate with Unity or Daydream/Android 7.1 people, as well as literary agents, publishers or anyone who has an interest in anything I do.

If I can help anyone in any of the above areas just ask. Or if you just have a question or want to say hi or meet for a meal or just Skype... get in touch!

Now I am in Kuala Lumpur.

I am very excited about Bubiko Foodtour! Always looking for ways to make another 360 "VR" movie like Beach Road, or be involved with another virtual project like SPOKEN.

MUSIC! I have done everything a band member can do except play an instrument! Lee Wen/Seasons Without Seasons. This series of interviews may be of interest. 3how! (Derek Sivers is connected to this post in more ways than one!)

As for my books, I will be happy to send a free ebook to anyone who requests one. If the titles interest you, check for more info on the internet or click here.

Stephen Black: VR, Art, Books and Singapore

This blog post chronicles some of the activities I have been involved with since 2002, when I began being based in Singapore. Previous to 2002, I lived in Manhattan,Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong.I have a BFA degree in Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a minor in Film and Video and have been employed by companies such as Fuji TV, Cartoon Network, Fox, MTV, France 2 and Turner Classic Movies. I have directed, created promos and written scripts in addition to my activities as a photographer, artist and writer.

2002-2007

Creative Director, Producer, Cameraman, Instructor and Writer for WalkerAsia/Compudia/Blacksteps

This story is quite cinematic but to simplify, the CEO who was the guiding force of WalkerAsia and  Compudia passed away unexpectedly, without a succession plan in place. The business plan of WalkerAsia was to be something like Youtube--but at the time we were unaware of Youtube, as it began 3 years later, in 2005.The business plan of Compudia was to create a platform that included email, chat, character licensing and a very very powerful educational/gaming SDK that was both simple enough for inexperienced children and advanced enough for professional game designers. CDK Landing pageI formed Blacksteps to to carry the project forward. However, despite the fact that Compudia had been set up with over $3 million dollars worth of funding and had positive, working relationships with the Singapore Ministry of Education, the Singapore Science Center  and other Singapore agencies, as well as the beginning of public acceptance, issues surrounding the IP made further successes impossible.

I then decided to spend more time with art and began writing books-- a lifelong dream of mine. (My father was a book salesman.) I was certain I would return to VR once mobile technology stabilized and VR headsets were finally accessible to the public.

Details about the books I wrote can be found elsewhere on this blog. The titles include: The Agaricus blazeii Murrill Notebook, Obama Search Words, Furikake, Contact With Shadow, Bali Wave Ghost and i ate tiong bahru which is a national bestseller in Singapore.

The following projects are VR-related

Secret Donut World is a collaboration with David Severn a British artist/resident of Japan. The Secret Donut World characters and the world they live in are designed specifically for VR. We are now reviewing SDW in light of recent stabilized technologies, such as those which made Pokemon Go and Job Simulator possible. We are preparing materials for partnerships, licensing and investors.

CINEMATOGRAPHY 8.0 light and motion in the age of VR, 360, 4K, 8K, AR, AI, CG and drones

In Praise of Shadowsby Junichiro Tanizaki. Written in 1933, when traditional Japan was contemplating a future full of Western modernism. (50 pages) Towards a New Architecture, by Le Corbusier. Published in 1923, when traditional Western architecture was contemplating a future in which mass production was revolutionizing architecture and society. (320 pages) Cinematography 8.0 by Stephen Black. Created in 2017, when lens-based cinematography was contemplating 360 VR , as well as AR, AI, 4K, 8K CG, lens/computer imaging systems and drones. (280 pages) Reviewers of C8.0 include professional cinematographers, editors and theoreticians/artists such as  Stelarc. ......................
So... Cinematography 8.0... most certainly will have a theoretical and poetic component;the first section of the book. But the tools of  contemporary cinematography change quickly and are  extremely dependent upon economics, unlike pen and paper or paint and canvas.  SO.. there is a second part of the Cinematography 8.0. This second half, a compendium, may eventually become a book project unto itself. The compendium will be something like a combination of  encyclopedia and product guide. The entries will be written because of  their relevance to the title of the book OR because they have been commissioned. That is to say, I am looking forward to working with  production teams, individuals, software makers, camera companies or anyone with a product, movie, concept or software connected to the theme of C8.0.  This section will be done on a first come, first served basis and the pricing will soon be determined. The rates will be displayed as part of the crowdfunding campaign for C.80. Another way of saying this is that I will write, for hire, about anything or anyone related to VR for the second part of the C 8.0 book, the compendium. The crowdfunding campaign is expected to start soon, mid-December 2016. If you would like to get a head start on having a description written about your C8.0-related topic, please get in touch with me through this blog.  Thanks. Note that the book cover used for the header of this post is not the final version.

Secret Donut World: a deck of 52 playing words

Did you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real.. and in the present tense... ..and that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience? Jethro Tull, Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day

OK.. It is very likely that you are here because of a  SlideShare deck, one that has only 52 words! You obviously enjoy and understand the importance of fun and games. THANK YOU.

This post is a brief introduction to myself, David Severn and the story behind Secret Donut World.

To introduce David Severn is easy. David (Dr.7 as I call him), is a British artist and illustrator, whose work has appeared in international publications of all kinds as well as galleries great and small, including the tiny, tatami-floored art space I co-founded in Tokyo a few decades ago. David's strengths include storytelling and the ability to create characters that are strikingly original, yet feel like old friends. David is based in Tokyo and his website is here: http://www.david-severn.com/

To introduce myself thoroughly would take quite a few paragraphs. I have been based in Singapore since 2002 and have lived in Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Manhattan and Bali. From 2002-2007, I worked on a 3D game creation software (CDK) as a producer/creative director and later used it to teach a great variety of students: from Malay schoolchildren to university-age programmers in Yangoon to Singaporean senior citizens. I am also a visual and conceptual artist, and have  great deal of experience in the music business, both recording projects and concerts.

In 2007, while waiting for mobile technology to stabilize and the VR ecosystem to become mainstream, I began writing books, one of which, i ate tiong bahru, became a bestseller. I am now working on a book called Cinematography 8.0:light, color and motion in the age of VR, AR, AI, CG and Drones. I have written scripts, theatre pieces and studied with Robert McKee both in a weekend long auditorium class and an invitation-only three day workshop.

Beach Road: a co-produced with Hiverlab, I wrote, starred in and helped structure the editing and audio. Beach Road was featured in the 2015 Brisbane Film Festival and nominated for Best Experimental Film at the 206 Las Vegas VR Fest.

SPOKEN Located within a virtual gallery built by The Dude, Eugene Soh, SPOKEN features a diverse collection of artists and writers curated by myself.

Together, David and I have created Secret Donut World, which is a collection of characters, assets, animations and environments that, from the very beginning were created with VR in mind. We have ideas for stories, games, haptic experiences, movies(3D, 360 and 2D) and amusing experiences which do not have yet names. (Angry Birds and Job Simulator were difficult to accurately describe before they were made. Once made of course, they seemed obvious.)

We look forward to speaking with those experienced with character and IP licensing as well anyone interested in the storytelling/moviemaking possibilities of VR and 360.

2017 is The Year of the Donut, a great time to get our characters and ideas out into the world!. Thank you for your interest. Drop me a line at bookmerah16 at mark g mail dot com to discuss any of this and learn more about our latest adventures. You can be among the first to sample Secret Donut World.

Onward!

Stephen Black

PS.I recently attended the  Asia VR: VR Content: The Making of and the Asia VR/ HTC Vive One Day VR Development Bootcamp. This week are two more events, one by Eon and the other by IBM. Next week the Singapore Media Festival starts. Attendance at these events allows us to show the possibilities between the latest technologies and Secret Donut World.

PPS. Yes, the featured image for this post is the cover of a  book, Flame Magnet, by Stephen Black. The image is a pencil sketch of Lance, one of the characters in Secret Donut World.

PPS I should mention that I have in various capacities for companies like CNN, MTV, France 2, Fox, Fuji TV, Cartoon Network  and Turner Classic Movies.

You are probably here because you received a piece of paper from me.   HELLO   I am writing this on Thursday, November 24....  a very full day. Probably on Sunday I can come back and fill this page full of descriptions and links about my projects. For now... SPOKEN at www.gallery.sg this was created with Eugene Soh and is full of art and writing. It requires a 10 meg download, which is free. Beach Road You'll need a VR viewing device to see this short film which was featured at the 2015 Brisbane Film Festival and nominated for Best Experimental Film at the 2016 Las Vegas VR Fest. Descriptions of my books including videos and reviews. Please consider taking a look at my crowdfunding projects for a Tiong Bahru poster AND a book on the way that technology has affected cinematography. And, scattered throughout this blog are posts about art, post full of photography, short stories and posts about all kinds of things.   THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!   Stephen Black

The Sudden VR Festival at Isetan (ay4ya)

From now til October 3, I am showing the works of myself, hiverlab and immersively and other 360 VR filmmakers, as well as films and artworks related to the 360 experience. The location is a small gallery-like space on Level 1 of the Isetan at Wisma Atria. Additionally, I am showing my photographs and explaining my conceptual art works. This is not low budget; it is no budget. I am doing this because Isetan is a great place to interact with people on an intimate basis; a quiet environment where VR can be nicely explained and pleasantly experienced. I have invited artists and friends to come and will soon create social media to spread the word. The "festival" will be low key, hopefully fun and a great way to network filmmakers and other creatives, artists, musicians, writers and producers in Singapore. The Sudden VR Festival takes exemplifies the potential of ay4ya and is part of the Formula W.E. pop up event which lasts until October 3, 2016. OK What I have: EQUIPMENT 4 viewing devices 1 phone/playback CONTENT Beach Road, which was featured in the 2015 Brisbane Film Festival as well as nominated for Best Experimental Film at the 2016 Las Vegas VR Fest.Beach Road is a co-production between myself and hiverlab. Selected works of Lionel Chok and immersively.   WISHLIST Manpower. It would be great if someone could gallerysit. I will be at the space as much as possible and will soon make a schedule so that people can visit when I am there. If there is additional manpower there can be more VR screenings. THE GEAR WILL NEVER BE LEFT ALONE. Phone With only one phone, there will be waiting times. When I start to do publicity, I will STRONGLY suggest that participants download Beach Road (or any other VR film) into their phones so as to minimize waiting time. Design I am e x t r e m e l y slow at using design software. However, I have worked as a creative director and am fully prepared with concept, layout, fonts etc. I would like to make a A4 flyer that can be scaled/modified  to make a standup and/or poster. If you know of a designer that can help, we will fly. Two hours requested, hoping to use less than half of that time. VR Industry people Who can I invite? Would be great to showcase all local VR producers and create a supportive network. We all know that things happen and suddenly we need a camera on short notice or get some advice on how to fix a stitching issue.  A community of Singaporean VR fillmakers? You may say that I'm a dreamer.... Ideas on how to attract people Media connections, bloggers anyone with whom we can share information. Not just  connect with media people, but with anyone who can help us connect with people on a grass roots level. Do send me an email about anything related to this post, or leave a message below. If possible let me know when you will be visiting Isetan and I will do my best to see you there... Finally, this all happened very suddenly. Although I hope action and discussions can be started immediately, this should not become a stressful situation. Let's look at it as though The Sudden VR Festival is a beta, a soft launch; simply a way to get together and share...with each other and the public. Oh yeah.... anyone have a spare Oculus? 🙂   Thanks for considering this.   Onward!   Stephen Black These photos were taken in the front of the popup, before the green light to use the gallery space. (That is NOT my art in the background.)
